A week before it goes into theatres, K-pop superstar Park Jin-hyuk is already preparing for the inevitable – he’s wearing his usual light skin look.
Park and his team have worn the same style of light skin for a year, to avoid the dreaded dark skin look that can lead to social anxiety.
“I think I’ve always had that,” he said.
“I’m always trying to keep my skin nice and light.”
K-Pop star Park Jinhyuk in light skin Park is known for his dark skin.
The South Korean singer is known as the ‘black king’ for his darker skin tones, with his hair a deep black, and his eyes a lighter shade.
But Park’s light skin has made him a star among Korean fans, with many referring to him as the “black king”.
“Park has a dark skin,” said Kim Soo-yong, a 27-year-old makeup artist from Seoul.
“He’s very good looking.
I think he’s very well-known for his makeup.””
He looks a lot better in a darker colour.”
But Park is not the only celebrity to adopt the light skin trend.
Last month, pop star Sia adopted it as her signature look, with her black hair and eyes coloured in a lighter tone.
It’s not the first time Park has adopted the trend.
In 2011, he went dark, as his father died suddenly.
Nowadays, he wears a light skin when he wants to be casual, like when he’s at the beach, said Kim, who’s also the owner of the Korean makeup company M.A.K.E.I.
A light skin is a subtle trend that can be difficult to find, said Sia.
In the US, people are known to have dark skin, and there is a darkening trend in the fashion industry.
However, many Korean celebrities have embraced the trend, and many have a dark, dark brown or dark olive complexion, said Lee.
“There’s something really cool about it,” he added.
“K-beauty has always been about this idea that you have to be a bit of a perfectionist.
And you don’t want to look like a fake.”
Park’s lighter skin has also inspired people to try wearing a lighter colour when it comes to makeup.
Kim said that his dark hair was one of the reasons he tried to emulate Sia’s lighter complexion.
A lighter colour means you can put on makeup faster, he said, adding that it also gives a darker complexion a more natural look.
Many celebrities have experimented with light skin, including rapper JYP Entertainment member Park Kyung-ho, who has dark, blonde hair and a light complexion.
Kim added that his own dark skin is not as bad as some other celebrities.
He said that many people see his darker complexion and assume he’s dark.
“People look at my darker skin and say, ‘Oh, you’re a celebrity.
You’re a Korean celebrity,'” he said of the misconception.
“They see me as a Korean person.”
Park has said that he prefers to wear his dark and light skin to avoid being “too dark”, and has said he will do whatever it takes to get his dark look.
“It’s like I don’t even care if I’m dark or light.
I just want to have fun with makeup,” he told Vogue in 2016.
